Well, Batgirl was entirely remiss yesterday in not posting that the Twins signed one CJ Nitkowski, late of the Braves and the Yanks, to a minor league deal. The signing is interesting for a number of reasons, as beloved, if misguided, Batling Shoeless Joe writes in the comments:
Shoeless Joe came to Bat-Girl for witty and informative insight into the Twins' signing of lefty reliever CJ Nitkowski (of the Sheboygan Nitkowski, I believe, not the Appleton Nitkowskis). And there is nothing, nothing! You should be concerned about this signing. Not you as a Twins fan. You as a blogger. Nitkowski has his own Web site - www.cjbaseball.com - and post content from time to time.
Please note - Mr. Nitkowski's web site is superior to Bat-Girl in at least one respect. It offers fans the existential choice of "Baseball" or "Christianity."
Forgive me Jesus, but I love baseball.
In other hard-to-spell news, the saga of Doug Mientkiewicz continues. Dougie Baseball, meet Mr. Met.
AND, speaking of Mets, Al Leiter has designed this adorable teddy bear to raise funds for Save the Children's Tsunami relief. Should no one buy it, the Mets plan to pay the stuffed bear $17 million to play the outfield next year.
Posted by Batgirl at January 26, 2005 10:47 AMI realize I'm a little stupid from sleep-deprivation, but "Dougie Baseball, meet Mr. Met"?? What does this mean? Is there a link? Help.
Posted by: LeftCenter at January 26, 2005 11:07 AMOoops, just got around to reading all the comments below -- I'm good now, thanks. :)
Posted by: LeftCenter at January 26, 2005 11:15 AMI think that's pretty funny, Doug will finally get the attention he deserves from the NYC media (backpage I know but still...)
It should make him feel important and loved - as long as they win. Attention can be a bad thing Doug ;)
Posted by: Mimiru at January 26, 2005 12:00 PMHi, I'm a Red Sox fan who has been coming to your site regularly(really really love it, by the way!), and I'm just so disappointed in this stupid ball issue. So supposedly Dougie is being traded to the Mets, but as someone who enjoyed watching Dougie's glovework more than anyone's the past year, I'm appalled that this even became a problem. They say that this hasn't influenced their decision on who(Millar or Mientkiewicz) leaves, but it still feels that way. :(
I'm gonna miss Dougie....and I don't know how to feel about all this falling apart of the 2004 team.
Posted by: emmingu at January 26, 2005 12:53 PMYeah, I'm a little disappointed in Doug's trade as well. I think he's going to struggle in the NYC spotlight - I'm friends with several Mets fans, and they're brutal - and I've always considered him a franchise player, a journeyman. Two trades - both to big money, big market behemoths - in one year does not suit the Doug I know and love. It's like being bounced around middle management, unable to direct your own destiny. Poor Doug - he's turned into my stepfather.
Moving on - I already dislike CJ Notricksie. His website is a labyrinthine non-secular sucker punch. If you choose "Christianity" it talks to you about Christianity; if you choose "Baseball" it makes you go to "Christianity".
Let's face it, CJ is no Descartes, and point-and-click tautologies will never inspire faith. Replacing Kyle on the rotation and leading us to a Series, well that, on the other hand...
Posted by: Haplo at January 26, 2005 01:36 PMOuch! Is Dougie Baseball ONLY worth a Class-A ball guy? That hurts.
Posted by: ForMorneau at January 26, 2005 02:12 PMI hear from a Mets fan that Dougie's contract actually says he gets to keep the ball if he makes the final out in the World Series (and, one supposes, the Mets win).
Hope CJ is a better pitcher than web designer.
Posted by: Kurtis at January 26, 2005 02:36 PMForMorneau,
Since the Mets are essentially a Class A ballclub, the Sox are bound to get a guy from the active roster (like Cliff Floyd) in return. Not sure if that makes you feel better or worse.

Speaking of hard to spell: The KARE-11 web site spelled Dougie's name wrong...Mientkiewiz. Funny
Posted by: k-bro at January 26, 2005 02:54 PMAnyone else find this sentance from the auction inanely funny?
"Marlin's pitcher Al Leiter, with his tough-as-nails concentration on the mound, is the first pitcher to have defeated all 30 Major Leagues."
Posted by: IcePhoenix at January 26, 2005 03:11 PMWe have a sying that is METS stands for : My Entire Team Sucks. Does that now mean that Doug sucks because he is a Met?
Kinda like AJ now playing for Chi, is it like a mutnat change they go through altering their dna when they join a bad team ?

That's just what the Twins got for him, in the person of Justin Jones.

Anyone wanna put money on who will win a girl fight between Jodi Mientkiewicz and Anna Benson?
As a non-twins person, I don't know about Jodi. What did she do that I missed ?
Posted by: mike at January 26, 2005 03:29 PMIcePhoenix:
Very funny. Gee, I thought there was only one Major League and 30 Major League Teams. ;-)
Posted by: k-bro at January 26, 2005 03:37 PM28 Major League teams -- the Mets and Bitch Sox are technically A-ball teams.

Posted by: YankeeFan at January 26, 2005 04:01 PMMike,
Others may have more personal experience, but Jodi was the queen of the Twins wives, as far as I was concerned.
She loved Minneosta and did a lot of things in the community. She also did some TV segments during Twins games, radio interviews, and generally had a great time.
That said, she likes to pop off in the media a little bit . . . although I don't think she's ever threatened to take drastic action if Dougie Doug was unfaithful.
She is a central figure in Doug's "Ballgate." Check this out for more details . . . and photo of the lovely, lovely Mrs. Doug. M.

Jodi was also very comfortable with the media -- very outgoing and friendly. But she is also clearly a strong person.
Coincedently, FOX is now reporting that Anna Benson is getting her own show.

>>Anyone wanna put money on who will win a girl fight between Jodi Mientkiewicz and Anna Benson?
I dunno, but I'd probably pay to see it.
The good news, for Dougie, is that there's a team, that is being aggressive in it's pursuit of winning and they WANTED him. I mean, that's got to count for something. Plus, the moves they're making, they might have a pretty good team this year.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 26, 2005 04:37 PMI don't know if anyone else saw this, but KSTP 5 (With Rosen and all) were reporting Nitkowski's signing, and they mentioned the fact that the only clip they could find of him was when he beaned three guys a while back. Rather entertaining.
Posted by: Yashyn at January 26, 2005 04:37 PMWell, better than no clip at all, I guess. Oh, and as for Dougie's offense, he' still a career .273 hitter. It's not a long career, but hell, .273 is pretty respectable.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 26, 2005 04:46 PMJodi is pretty and the Boston press doesn't seem to like her very much. Keep the ball Doug, screw them evil red sox bastards.
Posted by: mike at January 26, 2005 06:33 PMT-Goddess,
I vote Jodi. She was probably taking kickboxing lessons while Anna was auditioning for Project Runway.
Yours, RD
Posted by: RonDavis at January 27, 2005 09:43 AMJodi would trounce Anna. I used to sit four rows behind Jodi and she was mighty. Remember the photos of her taking endurance conditioning in Arizona with Doug.
Posted by: Silo at January 27, 2005 10:29 AMWe're estatic here in Metsville with Doug anchoring our young IF. The 'A' prospect that the Sox got back was rated #4 in our system. He may be a stud in years to come.
Look forward to letting y'all know how Dougie works out for us.
