Home Opener

It's just 73 days 'til the Home Opener. Batgirl can barely contain herself. Batling mmmarkiep asks if we should do a BatGathering, and Batgirl says oui! Only problem is, it's Opening Day and if we were to buy a block of tickets, we'd have to do it now. Also, they no longer have general admission in the Official Batgirl Gathering Section (Bastards.) Is this feasible? Thoughts?

How dare they!!

Posted by: Stacy at January 24, 2005 04:50 PM

Well ... I suppose we could take a tally of how many people are interested and then call the Twins Box Office and see what they suggest. If we have a big enough group, they might block them off for us and we could pay individually. Otherwise, it would have to be either take up a collection and someone go get them (I'd be willing to purchase on Sunday at TwinsFest) or someone would have to purchase a block and then trust everyone to pay them back (I didn't win the lottery yet, so I can't do this.)

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 24, 2005 05:02 PM

I know this isn't the stream for this, but: I wonder why MLB didn't include Minnesota in the "I Live for This" auditions? So they only have it for 75% of last year's playoff teams? Please, Twins fans are worthy of being represented in this ad campaign!!!!!! http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb_news.jsp?ymd=20050118&content_id=932127&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp#calls

Dear T-Mac

You should realize by now that MLB and Mr. Selig hate you and all other Twins fans. By letting Twins fan have a commerical they would have to admit that there are Twins fans, and considering that they just opened their eyes to a little thing called "cheaters on roids" I wouldn't expect them to also admit that people actually like the Twins.

I of course do not agree with MLB and wish that all fans, except the ones from the evil red sox empire, should be treated the same.

Maybe Jessie Ventura can be the next MLB Commissioner and he could put Polhad in a sleeper holder until he agreed to build the stadium himself.

Posted by: mike at January 24, 2005 06:32 PM

"the evil red sox empire"

Nice try Mike, but not quite-they may have humiliated you this year, and they may have been the team w/ the highest payroll to win the World Series, but you are still the evil empire-I don't see their payroll topping $200 million this year.

Posted by: TBird41 at January 24, 2005 11:05 PM

^^^ they can be the "lesser evil" empire then :P ^^^

Another option I thought of in the shower this morning (hey, ideas just come to me when I'm naked, wet and lathered up ... uh .. nevermind ... where was I? Oh yeah, in the shower...) um .. anyway... another idea, Twins Home Opener ticket related, was that, if people wanted to get tickets together, we could get a group together to meet at TwinsFest to buy a block together. Those that can't make it but still wish to get a ticket could let the ones that are going know that you want a ticket. That way, we could get a block of tickets together and the cost of getting tickets for those that can't meet up at TwinsFest is spread out amongst the Batlings so no one would be on the hook for too significant an amount of cash. This would also be a good example of the Batling community in action helping each other out.

Wow. Next thing you know, I'll be asking us to hold hands and sing that "I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony...." song.

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 25, 2005 08:40 AM

If I'm not mistaken when you buy a TwinsFest ticket you also get a voucher for an upper club ticket to a game. I don't have my TwinsFest ticket yet, are they only good for specific days, like do you have to specify you're going on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday?

If there isn't any restriction perhaps those of us who are interested could agree to meet on a certain time/day TwinsFest with our vouchers and play a hearty round of "rock, scissors, paper" to decide who stands in that long-ass line and get our tickets. Those who can't make it on the day we agree on could make arrangements to get their voucher to someone who can.

Just one idea, I don't know how feasible it is. Any other thoughts? It wouldn't be a bad idea either for someone to call the ticket office and make sure they don't have any restrictions on numbers of tickets that can be bought with vouchers at a time or to see if they have any better suggestions for us.

Posted by: Skorch at January 25, 2005 08:48 AM

Oops... looks like Mmmarkiep had the same sort of idea I did, only he got it posted while I fussed with my wording.

Posted by: Skorch at January 25, 2005 08:51 AM

Well, you know, Skorch, great minds and all that. I have a vague recollection that the vouchers aren't good for the home opener. I am absolutely not certain of that, but it's just something to consider just in case.

I know I may receive hate mail for this but ... I saw this and had to pull up the properties of the image because I thought it was Cordel.

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 25, 2005 09:02 AM

Mmmarkiep - I used my voucher for a home opener ticket last year, but I wound up not being able to go. It's possible they've changed the policy to what you've described.

Posted by: Skorch at January 25, 2005 09:18 AM

Group Ticket policies do not require payment until 21 days before the game is played, but you can reserve tickets anytime and as long as you do not dip below 25 tickets, you can adjust the number reserved at the time of payment. You also receive a discount per seat as well as concession discounts.

Twins ticket office suggests getting on the books before this weekend. So if we could get a count and be assured of more than 25 people, we could order now before Twins fest and not have to stand in line or worry about who's going to pay.

Posted by: E at January 25, 2005 09:21 AM

Goober and Sooz are (obviously) IN.

Posted by: Goober at January 25, 2005 09:32 AM

I'm in for at least 2 tickets. Maybe 5, but at least 2.

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 25, 2005 09:46 AM

Yaay! I would love to go. And, it would help achieve my New Year's resolution to meet Batgirl and the other Batlings in person.

Although - I would have to choose between purchasing Bat merchandise to wear to the Opener ( of course! ) or adding to my cylinder index.... mmmm I think Bat merchandise is probably cheaper (and more wearable!)

Posted by: Garage Logician at January 25, 2005 10:26 AM

Obviously, Batgirl and Jeb are in.

Posted by: Batgirl at January 25, 2005 10:45 AM

Sounds great. Do we call the Twins Ticket Office and ask for a seat in the section with the BATLINGS group?

Posted by: mas at January 25, 2005 10:48 AM

Unfortunately the Twins need more organization than just having people order individually as a member of a group. One person needs to make the reservation, collect the money and purchase and distribute the tickets.

This shouldn't be too difficult and I could do it so long as everyone is clear that if their money is not in hand by the due date (whenever that may be), their ticket(s) would not be purchased. Everyone who paid would of course receive their ticket.

Posted by: E at January 25, 2005 11:09 AM

Just Beth is in for at least one.

Posted by: Just Beth at January 25, 2005 11:12 AM

Maybe we should get a count first? I'm counting ... what? Nine or so?

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 25, 2005 11:16 AM

Oh, and they've renamed some of the sections. Lower GA is now called The Homerun Porch. Upper GA is now, officially, called The Cheap Seats.

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 25, 2005 11:39 AM

I always avoid opening night, I think it attracts lots of not as dedicated fans, but maybe I am just snobbish lol. What about going Saturday instead?

Posted by: Soccerfan at January 25, 2005 11:40 AM

I say we just overrun Hubert's and watch the game across the street!

Posted by: Eric at January 25, 2005 11:45 AM

Well, Batgirl, for one, will be there. She is also going Saturday. She would love to see the game with as many Batlings as possible.

She also thinks we should watch the Opening Day game at the The Bulldog.

This just in, Rad Brad is getting the ESPN love today.

Just an idea here, try to find out how many people you would have that would be interested. Than call up the Twins and tell them what you want to do and the situation you have. I would guess no one would want to put everyone on the honor system, too much at risk.

So see if you could get a “password” to order tickets with. You could than email the password to who is interested, or get it out to them however you would like. They could call in with the password to order their tickets and still get in the same section and group rate. This way no one would end up having to pay for all the tickets at once and risk not having them show up.

TwinsGoddess and the DemiGoddesses will be at TwinsFest on Sunday, in spite of the fact that Johan will not be there to autograph the Venezuelan flag I got for Christmas. Dammit.

We will most definitely be attending the home opener as well.

And Yes! Yes! to the Bulldog for opening day! (Although I heard they've changed their menu...)

Posted by: TwinsGoddess at January 25, 2005 12:37 PM

TG, would you and the demis like a join a crowd on opening day, or would you have other plans?

Posted by: Batgirl at January 25, 2005 12:53 PM

For those of you who have not seen it - it's the Twins Fest Schedule - I see that the Good Dr.Morneau is not listed - maybe he'll show up anyway ;-)

http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/min/fan_forum/twinsfest_player_schedules.jsp

I will be at the home opener - but I all ready have tickets ;-(

Saturday -maybe ;-)

Much Love -

>>(Although I heard they've changed their menu...)

Blasphemer! Say it ain't so. I'm up for Opening Day at the 'dog.

Hmmm. I'm planning on getting tickets on Sunday unless we have something else firmed up before then. As for non-dedicated Twins fans at the HO, I agree to an extent. But, it's still the HO and I haven't missed one since I moved here almost 9 years ago. I mean, it's like welcoming back an old friend that's been away for the Winter.

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 25, 2005 01:14 PM

I wonder if, given the time constraints, getting the home opener done will be impossible. Perhaps we should just plan on a nice meet-up at the 'Dog on opening day.

Though it is useful to discuss how we might do future BatOutings, as the lower GA is no longer available to us. (Which again, irritates the #@$@ out of Batgirl.)

Posted by: Batgirl at January 25, 2005 01:26 PM

I'll be there, but with a bunch of family. It'll be kind of a family reunion.

I love the HO. And this year will be even better; I'm looking forward to heckling A.J.

Sorry Batgirl...I'm just bitter.

Posted by: k-bro at January 25, 2005 01:41 PM

Batgirl, are you saying the Homerun Porch won't be GA anymore?

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 25, 2005 02:38 PM

Mmmarkiep - That's correct. There is no more general admission on the lower level, only in the upper deck, aka the glibly renamed "Cheap Seats". Due to the insulting nature of a response I got from the Twins office (well, one person in particular, but I won't name names here) when I voiced my dismay at this I'm only planning on going to one Twins game this season, and that will be the one I go to with my free ticket from TwinsFest. Going to any more will require substantial pride-swallowing.

Posted by: Skorch at January 25, 2005 03:11 PM

Hmmm. Well, that's .... something. I don't think making it reserved and renaming it The Homerun Porch adds any more value. What a shame. What a crock. The only advantage, to anyone besides the Twins, I mean, I can see to it is that now there is a chance that people might buy some advanced tickets in the lower row numbers hoping to catch a ball. Whereas before, it seemed like you had to get there awfully early to beat what seemed to be the same crowd of 17-24 year old guys that were always in those seats.

And that's a pretty thin theory, at best. Like ... Olsen twin thin.

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 25, 2005 04:03 PM

As for not going to any more than one game, well, that's crazy talk. I look at it this way, the most expensive ticket in the Dome is still only $38. That's still pretty reasonable.

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 25, 2005 04:09 PM

Okay, now I am intrigued.

What could a Twins front officer have said to so offend Skorch as to keep the mighty sombrero away from the Dome this year?

YankeeFan

Posted by: YankeeFan at January 25, 2005 04:12 PM

I wonder who it was. I mean, if it isn't the one I know, I wonder if the one I know would be interested to know that their people are losing the PR battle and alienating some of the more hardcore fans? If you'd care to e-mail me, skorch, I'd be interested.

Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 25, 2005 04:17 PM

Wow! Skorch sounds like a White Sox fan!

BitchSoxPride,

Ilk

Posted by: Ilk at January 25, 2005 06:43 PM

Ilk - Funny you should say that, in my last response to the person in question I wondered aloud about what I would have had to have done for the Twins office to send me Frank Thomas jersey and application for White Sox season tickets considering the previous response I'd gotten.

At any rate, it's all an old issue for me and I really shouldn't have brought it up. The talk of the upcoming season had me feeling a little combative but it's a self-imposed single-season boycott of one. I still encourage everyone else to go to as many games as you can. I've spent the money I would have used on Twins games to sign on as a founding member of KCMP 89.3FM. Those of you in the Twin Cities area that miss Rev 105 should give it a listen.

Posted by: Skorch at January 25, 2005 07:34 PM

Skorch-- at least that's money well spent. KCMP played Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" yesterday and I immediately thought of this site and wondered who else was listening. I'm loving what I've heard so far.

Posted by: Oggmonster at January 25, 2005 09:28 PM

As a side comment. I came from a "Cheap Seat" family ("Bleacher Bum", as my dad referred to it), so spent many a childhood game sitting in the upper deck. Right field, if you're in the front rows (near the foul line), actually aren't that bad of seats. You do miss the plays in right field, which is a tad annoying, but you're still pretty close to the diamond. It's an idea for Batling gatherings this year, I guess.

Just Beth

Posted by: Just Beth at January 25, 2005 10:22 PM

Just Beth - Actually, if they're the seats I'm thinking of, those have been renamed the family section, and I don't think those are GA anymore either.

Posted by: Skorch at January 25, 2005 10:31 PM

Oooh Skorch you are so right - Twins have wised up and jacked up the price for Secs 215-16, thrown out the beertenders, and called it Family Zone. Secs 212-14 straddling the right field pole are still GA and $6 a chair, but reducing the supply of those magnificent seats will have a deleterious effect on the availability of the best seats up to Row 10.

Those right-field upper seats have got to be about the best value in pro sports - comparable seats in other parks go for $20-40.

I never cared much for the lower GA in left -generally obnoxious fans (Batgirl & Batlings excluded of course), overpriced seats, and a view of the game inferior to that available upstairs in right. Several years ago, left field was reliably packed with the young and overserved, but since the Knoblauch Hot Dog scandal a few years ago the Twins have been scrambling for ways to improve the ambience out there, via drastically raised prices and family-friendly DQ promotions. Last year you'll have noticed that lower left field was seldom more than half full.

We'll see this year how effective the jazzy new name, reserved seating, and another price increase will be in covering the blue plastic surfaces of left field with human butts. My prediction - not very.

Posted by: cxpat at January 26, 2005 09:21 AM

$6 a seat? And you get a seat for $6? Man, you TwinsFans have a semi-charmed kind of life. Bleacher seats (yes, those metal benches having no seat-back that cause your bottom/back/neck/head to pound in pain within 3 minutes of bench-to-bottom contact) go for $8...and nobody WANTS to sit there...

Normal seats are $14, but seats with decent views are $20+. I won't even tell you what our season tickets cost -- starting to feel that ache coming on again.

YankeeFan

P.S. Maybe that's why I want the Yanks to spend less money on players... :)

Posted by: YankeeFan at January 26, 2005 09:33 AM

well, I would want 2 tickets if we're trying to get a block.

AND I will be at TwinsFest on Saturday, then at the Gophers vs. UMD hockey game that evening. It's going to be jam-packed with sports.
