Wonder Woman draws Batgirl's attention to this article from MLB.com about some Twins Caravan follies. Lew Ford and Grant Balfour go ice fishing!
And here's a picture that Team Batgirl didn't even make up:

This is cooler than Doom 3!
It is amazing how far a little Lew Ford goes in brightening Batgirl's day.
Posted by Batgirl at January 20, 2005 11:07 AMYou just can't make this stuff up:
Balfour said. "I really enjoyed it. Getting out on the ice in a pickup truck was unbelievable. I couldn't believe it."
On another note, Clemens' arbitration demand was unscrupulous. It was without scruples.

Posted by: YankeeFan at January 20, 2005 11:46 AMI saw that picture on MLB.com, too. From all the articles about the Winter Caravan, it sounds like Lewwwww and He of the Unfortunate Last Name (Balfour) were very excited about the ice fishing and snow. Lew looks pretty excited about his catch!
I heard Michael Cuddyer and Matthew LeCroy get to go ice fishing on their Winter Caravan trip next week. I hope they get pictures of that, too!

Posted by: Just Beth at January 20, 2005 11:47 AMReading further, it looks like the Twins caravan didn't appreciate "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle", a movie I haven't seen but am curious about. Also, it looks like their next stop is in my childhood neck-of-the-woods with stops in Crookston and Thief River Falls. Why they don't stop in Warren, population 1800+ is beside me.
Posted by: Skorch at January 20, 2005 12:27 PMNo, Lew, you can't keep it.
As for Clemens, you're right. He should have demanded some scruples in addition to the money.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at January 20, 2005 12:40 PMDid anybody ever suspect Clemens of possessing scruples?
Sorry, mmmarkiep and I must have posted simultaneously!
Skorch - don't bother with Harold & Kumar... it's a definite "boo! hisssss!" kinda flick. I just saw it the other evening and it sucked my will to live. J/K, but it's certainly no Napoleon Dynamite.
What's up with Balfour not sporting a cap in the pic that's up on MLB? Is he afraid to muss his hair? If he's not careful he won't have ears to perch his Twins cap on.
Posted by: lutefisk at January 20, 2005 12:55 PMRe: Harold & Kumar.
I liked the characters but the story was just stupid.
Posted by: She-Ra, P.O.P. at January 20, 2005 01:18 PMHaving heard such great things about Napoleon D (even from my mom, okay?), I was disappointed when I finally rented it. What exactly was so funny? I feel stupid, like I maybe didn't get it.
That was sooooooo off-topic. Sorry.
Is Lewwwww getting cuter and cuter or what?
Posted by: Say Rah! at January 20, 2005 01:28 PMNow that he's hooked on ice fishing, Lew will be a Minnesota Twin for life!
Also Napolean Dynamite was great! Geeks + high school + small town = funny! If you don't like it, don't bother seeing Sideways, either. "Merlot! I'm not drinking @#&*@! Merlot!"
Posted by: funoka at January 20, 2005 02:00 PMHarold and Kumar: More or less funny than Dude, Where's My Car?

Funoka - How about "Freaks & Geeks", the short-lived, totally underrated series on NBC? I LOVED it.

I wanna see Lew's catch after the "Pimp My Fish" posse works on it.
"...and I will love him and pet him and call him George..."
Posted by: TwinsGoddess at January 20, 2005 03:46 PMLutefisk - My curiosity over "H&K Go..." is stemmed from Roger Ebert(!) giving it 3 out of 4 stars, or a thumbs up in terms of his TV show. It's not that I think Ebert is the Alpha and the Omega of critics; I'm as equally likely to disagree with his opinion as I am to agree, but that he found a movie with such a mindless premise worth recommending has me wondering. I still probably won't see it unless I'm bored one night and order it on PPV.

Posted by: She-Ra, P.O.P. at January 20, 2005 03:59 PMmmmarkiep,
Speaking as someone who owns both the ND and D, WMC? dvds, and just saw Harold and Kumar, I think Dude, Where's My Car is funnier than Harold, but nowhere near the genius of Napoleon Dynamite.
Say Rah! I think you've fallen victim to my pet theory of movies, "The Last Person in Line" theory. Put simply, if you listen to everyone you know rave about a movie for months, then see it with such high expectations, you can't help but be disappointed by it. My brother suffered from this phenomenon when he didn't see There's Something About Mary for four months because he was wandering the desert in Utah that summer. Give ND another chance and watch it with friends. It worked for me and Zoolander.
Also, does anyone else think it's high irony when a YankeeFan condemns someone for asking for too much money? Oh well, Steinbrenner is probably just mad he can't offer Clemens $25 million to come back and pitch this year.
Posted by: cubsfan36 at January 20, 2005 04:04 PMActually, it was my attempt at poking fun at Lew's linguistic skills using a current, yet baseball-related topic.
However, I don't see what is so ironic about it. I have been telling anyone who will listen, burning pages of BG's bandwith and storage (sorry about the extra cost, BG) that the Yanks spending is too much, and will result in the 1980s for them, and have a league-wide impact.
Though I will be the first to admit that my comments are largely unreadable. I couldn't read them.
YankeeFan
Posted by: YankeeFan at January 20, 2005 04:50 PMErrr, rather, Ballfour's mad linguistic skillz.
YF
Posted by: YankeeFan at January 20, 2005 05:06 PMAhh, YankeeFan, now I see. Though I believe it was the Australian's linguistic skills, I now understand, and am thoroughly amused with the parallel.
And it's nice to hear from a Yankee fan with a grasp of reality and impending doom.
If only Pohlad could get his cold dark, not heart, what's the word I'm looking for, soulless void bitch slapped out of the other end of the economic spectrum and pay Johan!

As you refer to it, you oughta know I am intimately familiar with the plight of the Cubbies (family out there -- I get to Wrigley at least twice a year) and I am a New York Rangers fan... I see what a bloated payroll full of "all-stars" turns into.

Posted by: elderfelder at January 20, 2005 05:27 PMWell this Yankees fan is in fear of the day Mr. Steinbrenner sells the team. I mean he can't live for ever and I don't know if his sons or who ever gets the team next will have the desire to win the way Mr.Steinbrenner does.
Hey George ! Keep spending and trying to win before you go so we can have some more great years before the gravey train stops.

You can complain about the Rangers (what sport do they play again) over paying and being pretty terrible, but you won your cup in '94 and silienced all of the 1940 stuff forever.
Would you have sacrificed that title for the chance to be good but not win?
Wait another ten years (if they ever play that sport again) before you complain. I would take 10 or so bad years for the Flyers to win a cup this season (if there ever is a this season again)
Posted by: mike at January 20, 2005 05:54 PMLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW FORD!
Posted by: ryan paulson at January 20, 2005 06:08 PMDeep in his heart, Yankee Fan wants his team to go through "the '80s" again, so he can feel like just another baseball fan for awhile. This is why they exalt Don Mattingly, too. Beneath the cocky pride that Yankee fans feel about the 26 rings and all their Olympian legends, there is a part of their souls that yearns to identify with the Beautiful Loser. The Yank who didn't make it to the Promised Land. Don Mattingly is the icon of their 18 years in the wilderness. He is their Mr. Cub.
Pour a 40 on the floor for all the homiez who couldn't make it: Raise a glass to Don Mattingly! A reminder that but for the grace of God & the Babe, all New Yorkers might be Mets fans.

I must comment that Napoleon Dynamite is the funniest movie ever.
Lew is so adorable. As much as I like that picture, I still prefer the ones that the BatTeam make up, lol.
Posted by: Stacy at January 20, 2005 08:59 PMFirst, welcome back Wonder Woman.
She-Ra - Been playing Star Ocean? It's been 3-4 years since I've played it, so unfortunately I won't be able to help you much other than to point you to the FAQ that helped me out quite a bit. It's at http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/star_ocean_2_na.txt.
Good luck.
frightwig,
I don't know if that was meant as an insult, but since I can't figure it out, I wont take it personally. After some thinking, I don't think you are too far off, though you are not abolutely correct, either.
I do not long for the '80s, nor am I completely satisfied with the current approach of the Yankees, both from YankeeFan and baseball fan points of view. I would rather have a team that competes every year, but isn't expected to win it all every year. It's just more fun. '96 and '98 were the best championship years (though 2000 over the Mets was fun...) because the Yanks weren't runaway favorites in the AL that year (much less the league) and they conquered the league to be champions. '98 they had Chad Curtis playing centerfield for a good portion of the season (and Hideki Irabu pitching) and they won 114 games, that was more exciting. I don't want a decade of cellar-dwelling like the 80's. I'd much rather prefer a repeat of the '93-'98 seasons where we were competetive, but not expected to win.
I think that adequately answers your assertion mike as well. I am not complaining about the Rangers (they play hockey, by the way) per se -- I just would rather not see lines having Bure, Jagr, etc. on them. Be competetive, but don't keep adding aging "superstars" to your roster no matter what the cost.
I don't need (or really want) the same champion in sports from year to year -- "dynasties" as it were... unless, like (ugh) the Patriots, it seems like there are many teams that could (or should) beat them, and they continue to prevail. The Bulls were an exciting dynasty because every year (at least from '96-'98 and even before) it seemed that there were teams that could beat them (Reggie's Pacers, Ewing's Knicks (darn you Charles Smith), Stockton-Malone Jazz, Ehlo's Cavs, Barkley's Suns...the list goes on and on). The Braves are another example -- they keep winning, but every year they're not expected to...
Above all, the competition is the thing... that's what brings us to the games, the blogs, the tv sets, the bars... Going into the season, there are a handful of teams with a legitimate shot at the title. For those handful of teams' fans, that's exciting, but only to a point. Going into a 4 game set with the Tigers in May, when the Yanks have a 12 game lead over the rest of baseball... games start to lose meaning and they aren't as much fun. For anyone, including this YankeeFan.
Am I a bad person? Probably not. Am I a bad YankeeFan? Maybe...but I love baseball too much to want to see any team (including the Red Sox mind you -- there has been an arms race escalating over the years and the blame should not fall on one person/team) dominate. That being said, I can't begrudge Steinbrenner for doing what he is doing, because frankly, every team owner should be attempting the same. Steinbrenner markets his team well, and spends a lot of money on his team to keep marketing revenue up. After the '05 season, he will have to pay over $40 million to the league for being over the luxury tax threshhold. Teams should be utilizing that money to improve their marketing and overall team, not only to win, but also to bring fans into the stadiums, which leads to more revenue.
The Twins could do it. Reigning central division champions, 3 years straight. But who will fill the stadium should they (and believe me, I hope they don't) have a crappy season and go 60-102? Regardless of how many games the Yanks win this year, they are pretty much sold out. Any team could do it. Lay out the cash, bring in the names, it brings in the fans (and the wins). I hope more teams will do it. It will ensure that baseball will thrive for years to come (unlike hockey, where the salaries are out of control and the league allegedly can't support itself). Baseball can, and should.
Anyway, I am not going back to make sure that I don't contradict myself, or provide fodder for frightwig to exploit. I just don't care -- that's how I feel.
Respectfully,
YankeeFan
I was in a depressed mood about college....and I see this picture. One of the only things to cheer me up is Lew Ford. He's so freakin' cute!!
Questions....what's all at TwinsFest? Is it fun? E-mail me at lewscnadygirl@hotmail.com and let me know:) THANKS!!! :):):)
Posted by: Candace at January 21, 2005 09:52 AMYep, how Lew isn't everybody's favorite Twin I can't fathom.
Posted by: Jeb at January 21, 2005 12:22 PMSkorch - Did you go to Thief River Falls? I drove down there from Warroad for it and it was incredible. I wrote about it today, if you have a chance to read that.
Harold & Kumar - I liked it. Certainly no Dude, Where's My Car? Nowhere near Road Trip. But, I'd put it a step ahead of Euro Trip.
Napolean Dynamite - I think I've watched that 14 times in the last 16 days! Absolutely Hilarious! "Hey Tina! Eat some ham!"

I hope Matty has sworn off uncooked foods.
He ate that live beetle last summer and immediately went into a slump for about six weeks.
