The Proof is in the Payroll

In the Batgirl-Will-Believe-It-When-She-Sees-It Department, a.k.a. Less-Talk-More-Koskie, a.k.a. Put-Up-Or-Shut-Up a.k.a. Put-Your-Radke-Where-Your-Mouth-Is, from Sid Hartman:

Ron Simon, the agent for Twins pitcher Brad Radke, is asking for a contract calling for $10 million a year, a price the Yankees won't pay if they are seriously interested in signing Radke as a free agent. They have other priorities. Meanwhile, Mariners officials claim they have not made an offer to third baseman Corey Koskie...

...On another subject, Bell said he never has seen Twins owner Carl Pohlad as determined to win another World Series. "Sure, finances are important to him, but he talks much less about finances these days and a lot more about how we can put a team together that can win a World Series," Bell said.

Keep in mind that Jerry Bell is not exactly impartial. He's never gonna come out and imply that Pohlad is a miser, cheapskate, tightwad, or penny-pincher. HOWEVER, that is a very promising quote.

I agree that Radke is not worth 10 mil. And the Twins would be foolish to guarantee Koskie three years at 8 mil per. Let's just be glad that Scott Boras is not involved in any current Twins negotiations. Which makes me wonder, has a Boras client ever signed here? I do not recall any. Perhaps Pohlad and Boras (who represents all that is wrong with the game in addition to a veritable all-star team or two) know better than to cross paths.

So does this mean Pohlad is going to dish out a little doe?

Radke isn't worth $10 million and Koskie isn't worth $8 million. My guess is we won't get both.

Carl (Mr. Burns) Pohlad can hope, wish and pray all he wants for another WS title, but his ONLY input into that is to up the payroll from the $53 million he has set it at. Sid's statement is pure fluff (as is the majority of what he writes).

Lastly, lets be clear on ANYTHING Charley Walters writes. If he say's it, it almost guarantees that is ain't so. He spews more misinformation than the Kremlin did about the health of the Soviet Premiers. "Nyet, he's fine. It's just a cold." Two days later he's singing in the chior invisible.

M's fan here:
I hope you Twins keep Koskie. He belongs there, and besides that, I don't want him!

Posted by: David J Corcoran at December 5, 2004 09:09 PM

It's OK, Mr. Corcoran. I know you just dream of your team actually signing Adrian Beltre. The M's have generally done a lot worse than Corey Koskie at 3B since 1977, though.

I hope the Twins keep him, too. But we'll be kissing Radke goodbye if $10m/yr. is what it will take to sign him. Brad, sometimes you're Rad, but sometimes not so much. You're not worth $30m over the next 3 years. Kudos to you if you can get it, but I hope TR isn't the sucker. Might as well start pursuing Plan B--such as Matt Clement? I might prefer Plan B if it's named Matt Clement, anyway.

I like Koskie, but he is in decline. I love Radke, but $30 million . . .? He's not that good.

A better use of the money would be to lock up Santana.

frightwig,

dreaming of Santana-Clement as a 1-2 punch? Have 2 pitchers on the same team ever racked up 550 strikeouts between them in a season? that would be something to see, indeed -- except for all the batlings who would lose their voices screaming SIT DOWN 15 times a game.

Say Yankee fan... remember 2001??? Randy johnson had 372 K's and Curt had 293 For a 2 man total of 665... but you prob forgot that year...lol... Tom

Batgirl, please refresh my memory. Is this the same Sid Hartman who on 7/30/04 said there was no imminent Dougie Deal in the works? The same Sid Hartman who on 4/19/04 was optimistic about a Victory Sports deal? Spike

Wasn't 2001 the strike year? I am still waiting for baseball to resume....

...Seriously though, weren't those two a sight to see? Randy Johnson and Curt Whatshisname? I can only imagine the same scenatio with Santana/Clement. With Minnesota's advanced defense, Clement's ERA is sure to drop (from 3.68, not a bad starting point) and his WHIP (1.28) should drop as well. That's a pitcher that can amass some Ws in a Twins Uni.

Best of luck - I am hoping for Milton to return to pinstripes, myself.

Santana, Clement, Mays...Not a bad 1-2-3.

Carl Pohlad REALLY wants to win a World Series this year, just like Lucy REALLY is going to let Charlie Brown kick the football this time!

As a part-time Cubs fan, I think the Clement idea is excellent. Clement has not gotten the attention he has deserved because of the national focus on Prior and Wood (and now Zambrano). Besides, batlings will have a field day with his distinctive facial hair...

I can definitely get behind Clement moving out of the NL in general and the Central specifically. Can you figure out a way to get Roy Oswalt too?

Posted by: Redbird at December 6, 2004 04:43 PM

Clement would be a pretty good deal but I doubt the Twins would seriously go after a big-name pitcher. Keep dreaming Battlings, I wish I could dream with you.
