From the Chicago Daily Southtown:
"My team's all full of crap," Guillen said. "I hate that. Tip your hats to those guys; hey, we just got beat. I hope (the Twins) win, because that means if they win the World Series, I lost to the best team in baseball in 2004. You have to be smarter than that."..."Did they kick our butts? They did," Guillen said. "Did they play good against us? They did. And we went there at the wrong time? Yes, we went there at the wrong time because they were playing great baseball and we didn't.
"But, c'mon, if you get beat, you get beat. They played better than we did. They executed better, they pitched better, they caught the ball better. If the playoffs started today, they have a great chance to win because of the way they are playing the game right now."
And, if you have doubts as to Torii Hunter's attitude about the Twins play during these tense series, please listen here. (Thanks to mediaguy)
Posted by Batgirl at September 20, 2004 10:57 AMIt reeks of damage control...but at least it keeps the Sox from bitching anymore.
They're own manager is telling them where to stick it now.
Posted by: Torhu at September 20, 2004 11:58 AMAs I watched part of the New York/Boston game on Channel 9 on Saturday, I heard one of the announcers announce that he thought the Minnesota Twins were "the" most underrated team in "all of professional sports" not just baseball. Someone's been doin' his homework.
Posted by: Spike at September 20, 2004 12:09 PMI go to Purdue, and am inundated constantly by the complaints of Southsiders and their beloved Bitch Sox. The one that amuses me the most has nothing to do with the Twins, but rather how much more the Cubs get coverage for their drought. So Batgirl, could you do these poor fans a favor and use your connections and get a headline somewhere like this:
THE WHITE SOX REALLY TRULY AND HISTORICALLY SUCK
Maybe that will help the Bitch Sox fans sleep better at night.

How sad when even the manager rips you - I almost feel bad - nah - not really -
Posted by: Wonder Woman at September 20, 2004 01:27 PMTo be fair, the Cubs really do get assloads more media attention than the Sox – both here and nationally, but their fans really do need to quit wearing that whine out and let it go. The Cubs have a huge fan base, across the country as evidenced by the huge numbers of Cubs fans that show up wherever they play. Those are just the facts, support your team and shut up, already. Lord knows I’ve had enough of it.
They also conducted a poll in the Chicago Tribune a few years back asking which was more important to you, that your team win a world series or that your crosstown rival team never wins it, even if your team doesn’t either.
Most of the Cubs fans picked having their team win a world series. Most of the Sox fans felt it was more important that the Cubs never win. When hating the Cubs is your primary reason for rooting for your team, you are a lousy fan, in my opinion.
Whining is apparently a hobby for the Sox and their fans. I’m glad Ozzie set them straight.
I always liked Ozzie, way back to when he was a player. He played with heart, and he manages the same way. It doesn't sound like damage control to me. My perspective is that he is telling his team to quit bitching and try playing. It's one thing to get yelled at in the clubhouse, but when you are taken to task in a public forum such as the newspaper, you have to be embarrased as a team.
Posted by: The 7th Angel at September 20, 2004 04:06 PMGuillen is a class act! He tells it like it is. He is not about ego or reputation. I wonder if he will clean clean house in the off season to get rid of the driftwood that has been there for years now.
Posted by: soccerfan at September 20, 2004 04:39 PMmedia guy (or anyone else for that matter), do you have more Torii clips so i can put them on my site?
Posted by: dude at September 20, 2004 04:42 PMOn an unrelated note, it has come to light that MLB has given Candidate Santana a key endorsement by naming him AL Player of the Week for the second time. Surely this is an indiciation that victory is imminent!

OK, BatGirl, is it possible to respect the manager & loathe the team?
Posted by: BD at September 20, 2004 07:23 PMAccording to a poll on White(Bitch) Sox Interactive, the season ending injury to Magglio Ordonez is what doomed their season. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is the fact that they ran into the buzzsaw known as Supernatural that ended their season. Or rather sit down bitch!
Posted by: LunchBox at September 20, 2004 07:24 PMHENRY BLANCO FAN CLUB STARTS NOW!!!!!!!!
Two homeruns in two days: he is the king!!!!!
He hit the one yesterday for me. Bat-Girl witnessed it. (Goober thought it was LeCroy! For Shame!)
Posted by: Donnalove at September 20, 2004 07:57 PMBD-
I believe it is possible to respect a manager and loathe a team. It's like the Tigers and Alan Trammel. He got handed a crap team and refused to use that as an excuse. He demaned hard work from his players, and has created a huge turn around in Detroit. I don't have quite the distain for the Tigers as I do for the White Sox, but AL Central rivals are AL Central rivals.
Posted by: The 7th Angel at September 20, 2004 08:47 PMDonnalove - When Blanco hit that homerun tonight I thought to myself "Donna's going apeshit about now..." ;-)
Posted by: Skorch at September 20, 2004 10:16 PMIn Chicago, Guillen will last, oh, 20 minutes with that approach.
Posted by: scarlic at September 21, 2004 08:36 AMWhich is a shame. I'll stand firmly behind any manager that expects his players to shut up and play. One of the reasons I've become such a huge Twins fan is because of the way they play.
For me, the biggest draw of the Twins is that they play a lot like they're still in AAA trying to get to the bigs. They play with enthusiasm, and heart. They leg out those infield grounders hoping to beat the throw. They go after those foul ground pop ups thinking they just might get it. To me, that's the unforgivable. To play like it's just another job, ho hum, whatever baseball. Nothing irks me more.
