Why Johan Should Be President

From the PiPress:

The Twins have been impressed by how Santana has scoffed at the Cy Young talk. Twins pitcher Terry Mulholland, a veteran of 18 big-league seasons and 10 teams, believes that Santana isn't affected by his billing as a rising star.

"He doesn't take himself too seriously," Mulholland said. "And I can say for a few guys who have won the award, they had no time to be bothered by anybody. He's having fun. He has a great saying every day: 'happy birthday.' He tells everybody happy birthday" when he walks into the clubhouse each day.

"If you think about it," Mulholland said, "when you wish somebody happy birthday, it makes them feel good — even if it's not their birthday."

I feel the exact same way. :D He's a great guy.

Here's my funny Johan story. When I went to the autograph party this year, my friends and I made him a sign that said "Congratulations Johan Santana, AL Player of the Week!" and it was all decorated and stuff. We gave it to him, and he thought we wanted him to autograph it...he didn't know it was for him to keep. He said in his beyond cute accent, "This is for me? This is for me to keep?" He is such a great guy that has so much to look forward to in his future...be it his birthday, or not!

Posted by: Stacy at August 2, 2004 10:59 AM

Awwww, Stacy, that's so cute.
I went to TwinsFest last January or whatever and he was doing the photo session with the fans. He was standing up there and when you went to get your picture taken with him he would put his arm around you. He's a very sweet guy. I went with my friend and when it was our turn to take the picture with him, he was like "Ohhhh yeah ;)", lol, then he had one of us in each arm. I think he enjoyed it.

Oddly enough, it actually is my birthday today, and I have to agree, I do feel very happy whenever someone says "Happy birthday." Johan Santana is exactly the kind of optimistic leader this country needs!

Posted by: FPM2K at August 2, 2004 11:09 AM

Double "Happy Birthday" to FPM2K.

"Happy Birthday" to everyone else.

Posted by: Skorch at August 2, 2004 11:22 AM

THIS is the guy the ESPN voters wanted to call "The Barbarian?"

Supernatural Johan "Happy Birthday!" Santana for president!

I think I might just have a new boyfriend...

Posted by: TwinsGoddess at August 2, 2004 11:43 AM

So, who besides me thinks that Corey told Johan that "Happy Birthday" means "Hey, how's it going?" :D

Posted by: infield at August 2, 2004 01:01 PM

Infield - That would be hilarious if that's how it happened.

Koskie: "No really, 'Happy Birthday' is a common greeting in the US, they like it so much they wrote a song about it. Oh, and thanks for the tip, when I go to Mexico over the Winter I'll be sure to call all my waitresses a 'virago'."

Posted by: Skorch at August 2, 2004 01:31 PM

Twins Goddess, I think my girlfriend would fight you for him. But there's probably enough Johann "Yo honey" Santana to go around.

Heh, infield, I wouldn't put it past Corey.

Posted by: mmmarkiep at August 2, 2004 01:32 PM

mmmarkiep, tell your GF not to worry just yet, I'm still deciding who my new BF is.

Will it be Torii and his Gold Gloves? Jaque with the smile and the dimples? Lew and his a-dork-able batting average? Corey's charming Canuck accent? Or the lovely and fearsome Supernatural?? Mauer is out because couch potatoes are SUCH a turnoff, and Dr. Morneau is out of the question for obvious reasons (give me time, people...)

There are so many likely candidates, I feel a little like Scarlett O'Hara at the Twelve Oaks barbecue. I just can't make up mah mind.

Posted by: TwinsGoddess at August 2, 2004 01:49 PM

TwinsGoddess, you've gotta be kidding. Morneau is "out of the question" because he's replacing the terrible Doug Mientkiewicz? I'm sorry...but Doug has nobody to blame but himself. If he wasn't hurt all the time and was putting up respectable numbers, he could have held on to his job. He stinks, and Morneau is obviously the better player, so what do you expect to happen? This Doug-loving is truly pathetic when you take it to these extremes. To take it out on Morneau is just plain inhumane.

Posted by: Boo at August 2, 2004 03:41 PM

And it's not inhumane to try to make someone feel stupid for being sad that a favorite player is gone, and for not being instantly able to embrace his replacement as their new favorite?

Pot.
Kettle.
Black.

Dear Boo,

"Terrible" is in the eye of the beholder, and my love for Minty went far beyond his batting average. I don't find that "pathetic" in the least.

I haven't written the good Doctor off forever. I realize that none of this was his fault. With time, he may reach potential BF status. I certainly had the same mixed feelings about the Chairman in the wake of AJ's departure, and I'm mostly over that now. Mostly.

But with so many highly qualified contenders for the position of BF, even the smallest of issues can be a deal breaker. So as of today, Morneau is, in fact, "out of the question."

Call me "inhuman," but I suspect he will get over it without too much trouble.

That couldn't have been huggable, lovable Boo that made that vicious post full of vinegar and bile. No, friends, that must have been a Boo-imposter!

Dearest Boo,

There is nothing pathetic at all about loving a player, no matter his stats, and Batgirl does not like anyone saying so, especially to another poster--unless perhaps in Spanish "beyond pathetic" translates to "quite sweet." Or do you have other reasons for being negative toward Dougie? Did he do something to you at some point? did he put used bubblegum in your locker? You should be pleased, so many have come to love you; take heart that if you should have a slump, the love will still be there.

Sincerely,
Batgirl
p.s. don't slump though, we need you. Bad.

Dear Twins Goddess,
We at Batgirl are with you as you search for your boyfriend. It is a difficult time, full of many choices, but I'm confident you'll come through okay.
Sincerely,
Batgirl

Hey Y'all, Wanna come on my show and hash this out? Dr Phil

Posted by: Dr Phil at August 2, 2004 05:44 PM

Do you guys think that "Boo" on this site is really Jusn Rincon? The e-mail address for the name does not exist.

Posted by: Gina at August 2, 2004 05:56 PM

Dear Gina,

If you ask posters no questions, they'll tell you no lies. While lying isn't expressly encouraged on Batgirl,
silliness is.

Sincerely,
Batgirl

Quothe Mr. Mulholland:

"If you think about it . . .when you wish somebody happy birthday, it makes them feel good — even if it's not their birthday."

I agree wholeheartedly. Every time someone wishes me a happy birthday when its not my birthday, I do feel good. I feel good that I'm not a lunatic that walks around wishing people happy birthdays when it is not their birthday.

It's called schadenfreude, Terry.

Dear Batgirl,

May I please have dibs on Joe Nathan as my new boyfriend? I don't think he's taken yet.

Dear Batgirl,

I want Johan as my new boyfriend.

Love,

Dearest Bubblemint,

Of course you can. I'm glad to see you are feeling up to choosing a boyfriend.

Sincerely,
Batgirl

I agree with TwinsGoddess about not being able to replace my BF Dougie with Morneau. I went to my very first Twins game last year full of joy to see my Dougie play and instead I got Todd Sears. I still can't stand Sears to this day. So obviously Morneau as a BF would not be an option for me either.

Posted by: Mrs. Florida at August 2, 2004 10:14 PM

Dear Batgirl,

Well, Doug was already taken when your site came online.

I used to count Dustan as my boyfriend, before I even knew there was an official way to do so... but he's been gone so long, and I heard he recently got married, so I think it's time.

I feel left out... I wish the Twins had some sweet ladies on the team so I could pick one to be my girlfriend!
