Baseball sage and Batgirl-linking genius Eric Neel has sorted through the Johan Santana nicknames and has his favorites up in a handy poll (look to the right of the page). Go and vote, and tell Batgirl which was your favorite!
Posted by Batgirl at July 29, 2004 12:16 PMJohan "The Barbarian"? I guess that's better than "Johan Rosana Dana." Certainly these people don't watch him. I've voted for a batling's own "Supernatural" only because "Johantana" and "Sit Down, Bitch!" didn't make the list. And dangit, the shenanigans I know won't work on this page.
Reading the main article, I wholly agree with Neel. Randy should not go to the Yankees (if he can help it). He would go from being hero of the rebellion to the wicked oppressor. Ever notice how much more you like Clemens with a star on his hat rather than a "NY"? It'd work in reverse for Randy.
Posted by: amr at July 29, 2004 12:46 PMYUK. They all suck. My favorite (Johan the bench) is in last place anyway.
Posted by: Josh at July 29, 2004 12:48 PMI would have voted for Sit Down, Bitch - too bad it was not on the list - so I will only scream that when I am in the privacy of my own home - since there are children in ear shot when I attend games.
I voted for Santastic - I thought Johan Rosanna Dana was funny
I'm with amr. Johan is no barbarian. He's Supernatural.
He's been "Johan Sebastian Santana" at my house for a long time, but that is kind of a mouthful.
How did Jo Santanenbaum not make the list?
Posted by: TwinsGoddess at July 29, 2004 01:29 PMMan, our list was way better than that. Where do they get these ideas. I voted for Supernatural. It DID come off our list. The funniest one in my opinion was Johan the Bench. But that can't really be a nickname, can it? Pretty soon we'll all be saying Juan a Roll every time the Twins are on a winning streak. Ugh, lol, that's kinda a scary thought.

Posted by: jayster59 at July 29, 2004 01:37 PMYes, Supernatural is the best name by far. He sends those strikeout victims to Johannesburg!! And amr, I can't agree with you - I can't like Clemens no matter what he has on his helmet, not after he sucker punched the BoSox like that. It was just bad for baseball. Despite his shortcomings off the field, Kirby was always a Twin, and that was part of his appeal (a la Yaz, Feller, Mickey Mantle, etc).
Supporting my opinion on Clemens:
http://espn.go.com/page2/s/simmons/010531.html
But the Johnson deal would be like Robin Hood robbing the poor to give to the rich, so your analogy is accurate!
Posted by: BW at July 29, 2004 01:45 PMI voted for Supernatural, mainly b/c once Batgirl starts using it, it seems to find it's way into my vocabulary, whether or not I mean it to (my non Batcommunity friends gave me weird looks when I yelled "The Dr. just went yahtz!" almost involuntary after his 2nd pseudo homerun).
I'm also going to have agree with amr and Twinsgoddess-Johan is no barbarian. He keeps himself too well groomed for that. That's the only reason I considered "corvair"-he has the mustache.
In general, the BatCommunity is far more qualified to assign Twins nicknames than the people who must have suggested those nicknames for Johan. We actually WATCH him pitch. Most of those suggestions are just sad. I voted for Supernatural because it fits him the best and isn't cumbersome. Regardless, I think "Sit Down, Bitch!" can become a fans' refrain every five days regardless of what nickname he gets. I wonder if they'd let me put up a "Sit Down, Bitch!" banner at the Dome when Johan pitches? Speaking of nicknames, back in the Brent Gates years, my wife and I attempted to assign the nickname "The Bronco" to the utility infielder. We made a huge "Brent 'The Bronco' Gates Fan Club" sign out of four bed sheets and hung it from the upper deck in right field. The stadium people made us take it down because, they claimed, it hung down too far and blocked the view from the luxury box below. Mind you, this was in '96 or '97 or whatever, when nobody was in those boxes, anyway. I'm still bitter. I was hoping that "Bronco" nickname would stick.
Well, I'm at least glad the Twins now have Santana-quality players who need nicknames, and no longer those of the Brent Gates ilk.
Posted by: Andre at July 29, 2004 02:06 PMI'm extremely displeased that "Sit down, Bitch" did not make it to ESPN. That conversation was the first post of Batgirl I saw, and I loved it. Been coming ever since.
Posted by: The 7th Angel at July 29, 2004 02:14 PMThe Barbarian? That just does not fit....votes from non Twins fans should only be given 10% credit. While he certainly does stike fear in opponents, he is NOT a barbarian - way to smooth and polished for that.
While I liked Sit Down Bitch, Smooth Jazz and Milagro, they did not make the list so I voted for Supernatural. I was surprised to see Johan Johanna Santana in 2nd since I submitted that almost entirely in jest. Just another reminder that there are 2 kind of people - those who love Batgirl and the morons.

Posted by: SDave at July 29, 2004 02:22 PMJohan the Destroyer or even Terminator would have been better than Barbarian. Just plain bad.....
Dave
Posted by: SDave at July 29, 2004 02:26 PMI had to abstain from voting in this one. They were so BAD.
Besides, he'll always be Jo-hizzie to me.
Posted by: IcePhoenix at July 29, 2004 03:03 PMWhat that poll needs is a write in section...I would vote for "Sit down bitch!" in a heartbeat!
Posted by: Stacy at July 29, 2004 03:14 PMTo all-
I agree that those names do not do Santana justice. I guess people liked "Conan the Barbarian" so much that they like to think that the almost rhyming nature of Conan and Johan makes it the best nickname out there. Sigh.
To BatGirl-
Any idea on the status of Joe Mays? I remember reading that he is coming off the DL sometime in August... Who needs Benson DuBois?

Posted by: YankeeFan at July 29, 2004 03:15 PMTbird,
I am so with you on that. Once Batgirl starts using something, it mysteriously finds it's way into my vocabulary. Not like that's a bad thing. :P
Megan
Posted by: jayster59 at July 29, 2004 03:23 PMI thought most of those came from this page. And the rest were, of course, aweful. For instance, Barbarian. Ohhhhh I get it. Conan the Barbarian, Johan the Barbarian. That makes sense...If he were a hitter...
Posted by: Florida at July 29, 2004 03:26 PMInteresting. I voted for The Bench, and it's currently dead last!??! Even when I try to go with the flow, I end up going against the grain.
Posted by: Boo at July 29, 2004 03:41 PMI voted for Supernatural
on a side note, did you read the memo mr. neel left for the minnesota twins
mr. benson has a very attractive wife!
Posted by: James at July 29, 2004 03:42 PMIn the clubhouse we call him Johan cuanto questa el sombrero Santana.
Posted by: Boo at July 29, 2004 03:45 PMI voted for Supernatural as well, since "Sit Down, Bitch!" was unavailable.
Boo,
I am glad that you have recovered from your recent bike trip.

Posted by: mk at July 29, 2004 04:01 PMHere's a great video clip confirming the "Supernatural" status of one Johan Alexander Santana (Under July 22nd, "Santana fans 10").

MAN I love that high fastball!! 5,933 votes, and Supernatural only has 10%...
How about, "The pitching sensation from the Venezuelan nation"?
Cuanto questa el sombrero, what a kidder...
Posted by: BW at July 29, 2004 04:23 PMWhat happened to Joda Santana??? So with that missing and Sit Down Bitch missing I went for Supernatural.
Posted by: lackofintellect at July 29, 2004 04:24 PMI voted for Supernatural, too. Not that I'm pleased with it, but if the national media is going to make linguistic mandates, I'd rather have it be the best of a bad lot.
I don't even know why he needs a nickname. His name is "Johan Santana" for chrissakes.
Posted by: Haplo at July 29, 2004 05:12 PMDear YankeeFan,
1) Joe Mays sucks.
2) Joe Mays suffered a set-back in his arm beacuse he went to far to fast and any hopes of him coming back before next April are crazy.
3) Joe Mays REALLY sucks.
Love,
Mimiru
PS: Voted for Supernatural. It's clearly better than anything else. "Ha! Sit Down Bitch!" while awesome, doesn't roll off the tongue and should not be his nickname, but his catch-phrase.
Posted by: Mimiru at July 29, 2004 05:19 PMMimiru-
Hilarious. I applaud you.
I don't like the options either...
Besides, shouldn't Batgirl have her own poll for a Santana nickname, or is the Johanninator his official Batgirl site nickname?
We don't have to use the one chosen by ESPN readers, do we?
Posted by: bubblemint at July 29, 2004 06:20 PMDearest Ms. Mint,
Your wish is Batgirl's command. Tune in later.
Sincerely,
Batgirl
Whaddy'all mean Siddown Bitch didn't make the list?! Sheesh! It's right there in Red, Green and Blue pixels, Johan The Bench, all Disneyified, cleansed and scrubbed for popular consumption.
Posted by: Old Town at July 29, 2004 08:36 PMHmmmmmmm.....how to say this. Let's see. Johan doesn't do his thing Disneyified, cleansed, and scrubbed for popular consumption. He kicks their ass and knows it. Why give him a nickname all 'pretty' when it doesn't fit him. He's a hard core kinda guy. Johan the Bench doesn't suit how he does things. Sit down,Bitch!!! says it perfectly. He's got nasty stuff and knows how to use it. Ain't no other way to say it than SDB!
Posted by: rods59 at July 29, 2004 08:50 PMMy vote was for "Sit Down, Bitch" too. But, seeing as that's not available...how about Johan "Oye Como Va!" Santana, or Johan "Black Magic" Santana. (Both Carlos Santana References)
I'm with bubblemint. No one's saying we have to listen to those ESPN folks.
Posted by: The 7th Angel at July 29, 2004 09:43 PMWhy is 'nator' always used - I think we're more creative than adding 'nator' to everyone's nick name - just a thought =)
Posted by: Wonder Woman at July 29, 2004 09:46 PMIt works with some players, not with others.
That's why we don't call Torii the Hunternator or the Toriinator. Nor do we use the terms Morneauinator or Fordinator.
But Nathanator works, along with the phrase "Come on Joe, Nathanate 'em".
Though I will admit, I have recently discovered, it's not nearly as much fun as shouting "Sit down Bitch!!"
Posted by: bubblemint at July 29, 2004 11:33 PM"Man, our list was way better than that. Where do they get these ideas."
----
Two of them were mine: Corvair ("his pitches are unsafe at any speed") and El Corazon ("The Heart"). I'm pretty sure that, besides "Supernatural," the "Santana Claus" idea and "The Maestro" came from this group, too.
Posted by: frightwig at July 29, 2004 11:40 PMIndeed, frightwig. And "Yes Virginia there is a" Santana was mine. Though if it was mine alone, I have no clue.
Thinking about it more, I really like "Sit down, bitch!"
Hey! I thought Johan Rosanna Dana was funny. Guess I watched too much SNL back in the glory days. RIP, Gilda Radner.
Posted by: Anita at July 30, 2004 09:11 AMC'mon Joe, Nathanate them??
I guess I must be dull because I just give a huge
"Come on Joe - let's get'em out" cry or a "Come on Joe - you can do it"
I guess I just don't like the whole "nator" thing.
And yes - I do realize "nator" doesn't work for every player -
Posted by: Wonder Woman at July 30, 2004 10:30 AMWonder Womanator,
You can -nator anybody. Even the Old Mulhollanator. And Doug Mientkiewinator.
Sincerely,
the amr-nator.
AMR-Nator -
Funny - funny -;-)
but it wasn't me who said that 'Nator' wouldn't work with everyone's names -it was bubblemint -that said it works with some players and not with others ;-)
I prefer not to be 'nator -ed' - cuz it's too close to nueter
Good day ;-)
