The Eddie

Wherefore Art Thou, Romero?

Last year, bullpen security guard Gary Baggott was ejected from a Twins home game against the Bitch Sox for waving his glasses at optically-challenged umpire Joe West. This year, Baggott might be tempted to point those glasses a little closer to home. After walking the entire cities of Seattle and Oakland during last week's road trip, J.C. Romero proved tonight that he can be equally ineffective while pitching in the strike zone. While tonight Team Batgirl's ire is directed at Juan Carlos for ensuring another arm-shredding extra-inning extravaganza, the entire bullpen should consider itself on notice: Gary Baggott and fellow AARP member Terry Mulholland are starting to look like the best options out there. Winning like this is more sorrow than sweet. And that's why Romeo just won his first Eddie Award.

Since Eddie is my former Twins 'boyfriend,' and it seems that our present closer (or Hawkins in 2001) has an even greater knack for the "heart attack save" than Eddie really did, I'd like to ask: would it be possible to rename this "award"?

Now, see, you reminded me of the Hawk's performance during 2001. That wasn't very nice, was it....

I'm a big fan of Eddie. That said, the damage done to me by game 5 of the 2002 ALDS could only be undone by treatment out of Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind. Batgirl, of course, reigns with an iron fist. But the way things are heading, I wouldn't be surprised to wake up one day and find this award renamed "the Joe."

This article is bound to be tough on Eddie fans.

I seem to have the knack for reminding you of past traumas, Goober.

Um, yeah, let's just gloss over an extra $4-5 million if he's the M's closer for 3 years, and pretend that the Twins' offer was "in the ballpark." That's good journalism!

Anyway, if the "award" were renamed for Bob Wells, I don't think anyone would feel hurt or object.

By the way, in defense of Juan Carlos, I just noticed that Gardy had him throw 50 pitches in his 5/8 appearance in Oakland, and then he was tapped to pitch the 8th inning of a 2-2 game just three days later?

Maybe that wasn't the smartest decision you could have made, Gardy. J.C. Romero may be known as "The Rock," but still he is only human, his arm just flesh and bone.
